Lukashenko Begins Historic Visit to North Korea

(MENAFN) Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko touched down in North Korea on Wednesday, marking his inaugural official trip to the East Asian country.

Upon arrival at Pyongyang International Airport, Lukashenko was welcomed by North Korea’s First Vice Premier Kim Tok-hun along with Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov, according to a Belarusian state news agency.

As stated in the report, Ryzhenkov informed journalists that Lukashenko and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are planning to formalize a friendship and cooperation deal during the two-day stay.

“The time has come to more actively develop our relations. There are a whole range of areas of interest to both Belarus and North Korea. These are all reflected in the relevant friendship treaty that our leaders will sign. And based on this treaty, we will develop contacts between relevant ministries and agencies,” Ryzhenkov was quoted as saying.

He further explained that both nations aim to conclude 10 separate agreements throughout the visit, designed to reinforce the legal basis for joint collaboration, including what he referred to as the “fundamental” friendship treaty.

The Belarusian presidency revealed Lukashenko’s short visit on Tuesday, noting that it is being conducted at the invitation of the North Korean leader.
