Latvia Reports Drone Incursion from Russia

(MENAFN) Latvia’s military reported that an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle entered its airspace from the direction of Russia and was later destroyed in the country’s eastern border area, according to statements cited in reports.

The Latvian National Armed Forces said its early warning systems detected an approaching object overnight, which was subsequently tracked to the Kraslava region. An audible blast was recorded in the area where the drone was believed to have detonated.

According to Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff Egils Lescinskis, radar systems first identified the object at 2:19 a.m., with additional confirmation coming from acoustic sensors. Air defense units were then deployed to respond to the potential threat. He noted that “At 2:19 a.m., our radars detected indications of what could be an unidentified aerial object approaching Latvian territory and crossing the state border. We also observed this on our acoustic sensors, and our air defense group was dispatched.”

The object ultimately detonated near the village of Dobrocina in Kraslava Municipality, an area considered strategically significant due to its proximity to the external borders of the European Union and its adjacency to both Belarus and Russia.

Emergency services, including military personnel, police units, and border guards, were sent to the location. Authorities confirmed that fragments of the drone have been collected and are currently under examination to determine their origin, while the manufacturer and country of production remain unknown.

Officials also reported a separate incident earlier the same night, in which another object was detected entering from Belarus before altering its course and exiting back toward Russia.

When asked whether the two events might be connected, Lescinskis suggested this was unlikely, stating that the object “most likely veered off course or was affected by electromagnetic warfare measures protecting some technically important objects.”

No casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure have been reported. Authorities have stated that there is no immediate threat to national airspace, though investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
