Kremlin Signals Conditional Meeting Between Putin, Zelenskyy

(MENAFN) Russian authorities indicated that President Vladimir Putin is open to holding talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only if the meeting is intended to formally conclude peace agreements, according to statements.

A Kremlin spokesperson reiterated that Putin has consistently expressed willingness to meet his Ukrainian counterpart. However, he stressed that the purpose of such a meeting must be clearly defined and results-oriented.

“The main thing is the purpose of the meeting. Why should they meet? Putin said he is ready to meet in Moscow at any time,” Peskov said. “The main thing is that there is a purpose for the meeting, and most importantly, that the meeting be productive, and this can only be for the purpose of finalizing agreements.”

He further noted that any high-level meeting would require substantial preparatory efforts, adding that Ukraine lacks the necessary “political will” to advance in that direction.

On the other side, Zelenskyy stated earlier that Ukraine remains open to negotiations in any format and at any time, though he emphasized that restarting talks is not solely within Kyiv’s control.

He also pointed out that discussions would preferably take place in locations that have previously hosted negotiations, specifically mentioning Türkiye and parts of the Middle East.

“Although, in principle, we are not afraid to meet at any time in any country, except Russia and Belarus, we emphasize this once again. I am sure that the trilateral meeting should be resumed,” he added.

Efforts to reach a settlement through US-facilitated negotiations have occurred multiple times, but progress has been hindered by broader geopolitical developments, including the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
